Please feel free to share a story. There may be people who need to read it today.
Two guidelines:
Celebrate others. People are more likely to hear and relate to your story if it’s not a story of your own kindness, but of one that you received or witnessed.
Be careful with other people’s stories and dignity. It’s a pretty natural human tendency to categorize each other, but doing so has the capacity to diminish, dehumanize, and stereotype. Be careful that the humanity of everyone in your story is acknowledged, and that some folks aren’t just become props to make other people look good. This happens a lot with folks who are visibly poor (for example, please be careful not to reduce a person in your story to “this homeless guy”). Describe what happened to whom, and who did what in order to tell your story, and leave the readers the chance to identify with any of the characters.
Also, anonymity is fine. No need to name people, especially without their permission.
Thanks!
